Fundamental influences of particles on stirred and unstirred venting processes of foaming systems

Henrik LEIMEISTER,Jörg STEINBACH

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 141-148 doi: 10.1007/s11705-014-1423-0

Abstract: Venting is the common safety measure to protect plant equipment against excessive overpressure. So far, scenarios in which particles were part of the system and should have been accounted for did ignore their presence; the scenarios were treated like a two-phase system. Current research shows that particles can have a major influence on the venting behaviour. Experimental results indicate that particles affect level swell and relief flow especially of foamy systems. Based on those results four different layers of influence of the particle have been identified and are presented in a first model. Based on this model recommendations for the development of new and more complex models are given.

Studies of fiber-matrix debonding

Navneet DRONAMRAJU,Johannes SOLASS,Jörg HILDEBRAND

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 4,   Pages 448-456 doi: 10.1007/s11709-015-0316-8

Abstract: In this paper, the debonding of a single fiber-matrix system of carbon fiber reinforced composite (CFRP) AS4/Epson 828 material is studied using Cohesive Zone Model (CZM). The effect of parameters namely, maximum tangential contact stress, tangential slip distance and artificial damping coefficient on the debonding length at the interface of the fiber-matrix is analyzed. Contact elements used in the CZM are coupled based on a bilinear stress-strain curve. Load is applied on the matrix, tangential to the interface. Hence, debonding is observed primarily in Mode II. Wide range of values are considered to study the inter-dependency of the parameters and its effect on debonding length. Out of the three parameters mentioned, artificial damping coefficient and tangential slip distance significantly affect debonding length. A thorough investigation is recommended for case wise interface debonding analysis, to estimate the optimal parametric values while using CZM.

Impact of photocatalytic remediation of pollutants on urban air quality

GEORGE, Anne BEELDENS, Fotios BARMPAS, Jean-François DOUSSIN, Giuseppe MANGANELLI, Hartmut HERRMANN, Jörg

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 5, doi: 10.1007/s11783-016-0834-1

Abstract: Air pollution remediation using photocatalytic construction materials was tested. NO and VOC uptake rates on different materials were measured in the laboratory. Effective NO and VOC abatement levels were tested under real conditions. Recommendations for implementation of photocatalytic materials are provided. In the recent years, photocatalytic self-cleaning and “depolluting” materials have been suggested as a remediation technology mainly for NO and aromatic VOCs in urban areas. A number of products incorporating the aforementioned technology have been made commercially available with the aim to improve urban air quality. These commercial products are based on the photocatalytic properties of a thin layer of TiO at the surface of the material (such as glass, pavement, etc.) or embedded in paints or concrete. The use of TiO photocatalysts as an emerging air pollution control technology has been reported in many locations worldwide. However, up to now, the effectiveness measured in situ and the expected positive impact on air quality of this relatively new technology has only been demonstrated in a limited manner. Assessing and demonstrating the effectiveness of these depolluting techniques in real scale applications aims to create a real added value, in terms of policy making (i.e., implementing air quality strategies) and economics (by providing a demonstration of the actual performance of a new technique).

Abstract:

Forkhead box P3 (FOXP3) is a "master regulator" of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which areAs a consequence, the PTMs change the stability of FOXP3 and its capability to regulate gene expressionAlthough FOXP3 per se is not an ideal drug target, deacetylases, acetyltransferases, kinases, and other enzymes that regulate the PTMs of FOXP3 are potential targets to modulate FOXP3 and TregFOXP3" side effects must be considered when inhibitors to these enzymes are used.

Abstract: However, little is known about the function of Lipin3 in triglyceride (TG) metabolism.Hence, we generated Lipin3 heterozygous knockout (Lipin3-heKO) mice and cultured primary hepatocytesto explore the pathophysiological roles of Lipin3 in TG metabolism. Our study suggested that Lipin3 was a novel disease-causing gene inducing obesity and HTG.We also established a relationship between Lipin3 and mitochondrial dysfunction.
